Cancer (Oncology)
Oncology is a discipline specialises in treatment of cancer. Blood cancer and solid cancer are treated differently. The mainstay of treatment for blood cancer is drug treatment. For solid cancer a multi-disciplinary team approach involving surgery, drug treatment and/or radiotherapy is often needed, each carried out by different specialists. Cancer in children has different spectrum of disease from adult cancer, and they are treated by paediatrician with oncology specialisation (pediatric oncologist).
Multidisciplinary Team approach (MDT)
Although surgery is often needed in early-stage cancer, for certain cancer, upfront drug treatment can shrink down the tumor and increase the success of surgery. Sometimes carefully designed upfront therapy can even decrease the chances of recurrence. In Gleneagles Hospital, we have regular MDT meetings where specialists of different discipline would meet up to discuss challenging cases, to ensure the patients could receive the state-of-the-art evaluation and management plan. Our MDT is made up of surgeons, medical oncologists, clinical oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists.
