Brain & Nerves (Neurology)
Neurology
Diseases affecting the brain, nervous system and spinal cord are usually diagnosed with a neurologic examination. This is not to be confused with a psychiatric examination, which predominantly focuses on a patient's mental state and behaviour. It is important to understand that mental illnesses are typically classified separately from disorders of the central nervous system. Major neurological disorders include stroke, dementia, epilepsy, and movement disorders.
Neurosurgery
Neurosurgery is a surgical subspecialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the nervous system. Conditions that commonly require neurosurgical attention include brain and spinal tumours, head trauma, hydrocephalus, cerebrovascular diseases (e.g., stroke), and functional disorders (e.g., epilepsy, Parkinsonism). Its contemporary therapeutic paradigm is multi-disciplinary and multi-modality in nature, involving conventional open surgery, minimally invasive techniques (e.g., endoscopy), endovascular treatment, as well as chemotherapy and radiation therapy (e.g., radiosurgery). Given the delicate and critical functions of the nervous system, neurosurgical treatment is aimed at a balance between disease control/eradication, and the preservation of function and quality of life; treatment is individualized according to personal needs and preferences.
