(31 October 2017 – Hong Kong)        As a brand new facility, Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital (GHK) has the advantage of being one of the most modern and well-equipped private hospitals in the region. GHK has commenced today its PET-MR (Positron Emission Tomography – Magnetic Resonance Imaging) service. It is the second PET-MR scanner installed in Hong Kong, complementing the suite of advanced diagnostic and imaging technology and equipment at GHK.

The state-of-the-art PET-MR is the hybrid positron-emission tomography (PET) scanner integrated with a 3T magnetic resonance (MR) scanner, capable of performing simultaneous PET and MRI scans and providing superior imaging quality that enhances diagnostic accuracy. PET-MR detects and diagnoses complex malignancies with high level of accuracy, and is particularly instrumental in the investigation of brain tumors, neck tumors and tumors inside the pelvic region such as prostate cancer. It is also useful in the investigation of neurologic diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

With the use of the PET-MR, patients’ exposure to radiation can be greatly reduced due to the 50% reduction in the use of radiation dose on patients, compared to the PET-CT. The technology also reduces the use of intravenous contrast medium, hence lowering the risk of allergic reaction of some patients who may be allergic to contrast mediums. This new hybrid imaging technology provides information on the causes, effects and development of various diseases, allowing doctors to provide better treatment planning for patients.

GHK’s radiology department provides a full range of diagnostic and imaging services including bone densitometry, fluoroscopic examinations and radiography services, mammography, ultrasound scan, and nuclear medicine, offering the latest models of advanced equipment including Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT), Single Photon Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (SPET-CT), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Its highly experienced radiologists and radiographers work closely to provide interpretive diagnostic imaging reports and opinions to assist the doctor in making the best decisions on patients’ treatments.
