Orthokeratology and
Contact Lens Fitting Assessment Service

Orthokeratology is a method using contact lenses for refractive error correction and myopia control. Ortho-K lens (OK lens) is a type of rigid gas permeable lens worn during the night time. It reshapes and flattens the cornea and temporary corrects near sightedness. Therefore, it functions to replace the need for contact lenses or spectacles during daytime. A number of well-designed clinical trials have reported that Ortho-K lens can reduce myopia progression in children. The underlying mechanism remains to be clearly understood but it is postulated that the warped cornea creates a peripheral defocus of the image on the retina. ¹ It is recommended for those having myopia less than -5.00D and astigmatism less than -1.50D. It is important for parents or patients to know that the use of contact lenses, like Ortho-K, can increase the risk of a sight-threatening cornea infection. Therefore extra care must be placed on the care and handling of such lenses as well as the contact lens accessories such as contact lens cases.²
