Total Knee Replacement

What is Total Knee Replacement?

Knee pain caused by arthritis can severely affect the patient’s ability to lead a full and active life. Artificial (total) knee replacement is a procedure to replace the diseased (arthritic) parts of the joint with artificial joint components, usually the surfaces of the ends of the bones. The surgery becomes an increasingly common way to treat the condition in older people.

Why is Total Knee Replacement required?

The main reason for arthritic joint replacement with an artificial joint is to stop the pain caused by bones rubbing against each other. Replacing the painful arthritic joint with an artificial joint gives the bones new surfaces that can move smoothly without causing pain. The goal is to help patients return to normal activities with less pain and greater freedom of movement.
