Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong wins technology excellence award for its telemedicine service for hypertension patients
(7 September 2021 – Hong Kong) Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong (Gleneagles) has recently won the Online Services – Healthcare Award in the Hong Kong Business Technology Excellence Awards 2021 for its innovative remote hypertension care programme which provides teleconsultation with medication delivery service to patients.
To enable patients to receive quality and uninterrupted medical services during the ongoing pandemic, Gleneagles has partnered with Hong Kong Telecom (HKT) to provide teleconsultation via a proprietary telemedicine platform called DrGo since 2020.
In Hong Kong, about one in three adults suffer from hypertension. Amongst those diagnosed with hypertension, about 70% are prescribed blood pressure-lowering medication, but only around 40% of this treated group attain good control of blood pressure. In view of this, in April 2021, Gleneagles extended its teleconsultation service to chronic disease management by launching the remote hypertension care programme in partnership with HKT and insurance provider FWD Hong Kong for holistic hypertension care.
The programme is considered the first of its kind in Hong Kong, providing patients with a wide spectrum of hypertension care support, which includes medical and dietary advice, remote blood pressure monitoring, and door-to-door delivery of prescribed medicine.
It uniquely combines face-to-face and video consultations provided by doctors and dietitians from Gleneagles. Coupled with the smart use of a connected blood pressure metre with a 4G SIM card for data uploading to a Cloud platform, patients can record their daily blood pressure regularly in the comfort of their homes. An automated charting of the health readings recorded will then be available on the platform for remote monitoring by Gleneagles’ doctors. The charting provides insights into patients’ adherence and response to treatments, helping doctors give timely advice and recommend appropriate follow-ups or introduce interventions, such as medication adjustment.
Dr Kenneth Tsang, Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, said, “Self-monitoring by patients with the assistance of portable or wearable devices will be an integral part of the future of healthcare and patient empowerment. The concept of combining remote monitoring of blood pressure with teleconsultation helps enhance patients’ self-awareness of their health conditions, while empowering them to play a more active role in the management of their health. We are pleased to hear from our patients that they appreciate the comprehensive care while staying safe at home in the pandemic situation.” “This is also the first step of our exploration of how the innovative use of technology may be applied to the remote management of other chronic diseases,” Dr Tsang added.
Embracing a culture of innovation, Gleneagles aspires to continue to be a pioneer in bringing to patients the latest and most advanced healthcare solutions and medical technologies including robotic systems. One of the latest advancements includes its robotic arm-assisted joint replacement surgeries, which have contributed to enhanced surgical precision, faster patient recovery and improved clinical outcomes. Its 24-hr Outpatient and Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit are also equipped with advanced cardiovascular life support capabilities including the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) which provides support to the heart and lungs in critical conditions.
As part of its effort to enhance patient engagement and experience, Gleneagles has launched the “My Gleneagles SmartHealth” app which offers a range of self-manage online services including outpatient appointment making, waiting time preview, viewing of health records and laboratory test results, bills settlement, hospital location navigation, etc. More new services on the app are in the pipeline.
Organised by the Hong Kong Business magazine, the Awards recognises the remarkable achievements of outstanding companies with the most innovative and unique IT initiatives and solutions that helped enhance their company's business in Hong Kong.
