Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong provides 1,000 free hepatitis B screenings to raise public awareness of liver health
(29 April 2025 – Hong Kong) Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong (Gleneagles) is committed to upholding the sustainability aspiration, Care. For Good., of its parent company IHH Healthcare and strives to care for our patients, our people, the public and our planet through various initiatives. Gleneagles has recently launched a hepatitis B virus (HBV) and anti-body screening programme offering free blood tests to 1,000 eligible persons in the community with the aim of raising public awareness of liver health.
The screening programme is open to persons aged 37-70 who are not a known hepatitis B carrier and are residents of the Southern District or Central and Western District. Eligible participants can choose to receive the blood test with a report free of charge at Gleneagles Medical Clinic Central, Gleneagles Healthcare Wong Chuk Hang or Gleneagles Healthcare Novum Place. Prior to the blood test, a consultation with Gleneagles’ doctor will be arranged. Relevant health advice and referrals to specialists, if necessary, will be provided to participants. Additionally, participants who are considered clinically-suitable may opt to receive the hepatitis B vaccine or book follow up consultations at discounted rates.
According to the Thematic Report on Viral Hepatitis (Population Health Survey 2020 - 22) released by the Department of Health, approximately 410,000 people in Hong Kong have hepatitis B. The report also revealed that the prevalence of HBV infection was much higher in those born before the implementation of universal childhood immunization programme in 1988. Some patients fail to clear the virus and develop chronic hepatitis B, which may lead to acute liver failure, cirrhosis or even liver cancer. HBV infection may remain asymptomatic until signs and symptoms have developed into serious liver damage.
Dr Kenneth Tsang, Regional Chief Executive Officer of IHH Healthcare North Asia and Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, said, “Beyond providing high-quality healthcare services, we are committed to contributing to health promotion and disease prevention through various initiatives and platforms. This screening programme is in line with the Government’s plan announced in 2024 Policy Address to strengthen its promotion of liver health awareness in the community. By launching this community screening programme, we hope to help identify hepatitis B carriers who are unaware of their condition, improving overall public health in the long run.”
