Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong extends special offers to over 150 medical packages for public hospital patients and offers different platforms to provide COVID-19 tests to help reduce risk of disease spreading

(1 April 2020 – Hong Kong) Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong (Gleneagles) has broadened its earlier scheme to help patients whose surgeries have been postponed or cancelled due to the reduction of non-urgent services at public hospitals in a bid to further help alleviate the pressure on public hospitals. The hospital also has in place different platforms to provide COVID-19 tests to help reduce the risk of spreading of the disease in the community.

Effective from 1 April 2020, Gleneagles has extended the existing special offers to over 150 all-inclusive medical packages to help more patients who are affected by the reduction in surgeries at public hospitals. Until 31 August 2020, patients with appointments scheduled for specialist outpatient services at public hospitals are eligible to join the all-inclusive medical packages at a reduction of 20% from the original fees, and a 30% reduction on insertion of dialysis catheter procedures. Newly-added surgical packages offered at special prices include breast lesion excision, laparoscopic appendectomy, colectomy etc. The programme covers surgeries and procedures in a spectrum of specialties including orthopaedics, urology, gynaecology and general surgery.

The existing special offers on caesarean-section packages for prospective mothers with public hospital antenatal appointments and a fee cap of $5,000 for additional services are now also extended to cover normal delivery, with a discounted doctor’s fee. All expectant mothers are eligible for the offers.

Mr Dirk Schraven, Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles, said “In view of the recent surge in the number of confirmed cases, we feel obliged to step up by more than doubling the number of our discounted all-inclusive packages. By doing so, we hope to help public hospitals to focus their resources on treating infected patients and release more beds for new cases.”

In support of the government’s Enhance Laboratory Surveillance Programme, Gleneagles has been arranging clinically-indicated patients to receive the Department of Health’s deep throat saliva tests for the virus. To help screen low-risk inpatient cases, subject to doctor’s assessment, the hospital provides nasopharyngeal swab tests for COVID-19, with test results available in around 24 hours. Special full-panel test may also be arranged for low-risk patients who request for testing for COVID-19 and other viruses commonly responsible for respiratory infections.

The different platforms established to provide COVID-19 tests aim to enhance the hospital’s capability to screen low-risk patients who may or may not have clear symptoms. “Some low-risk patients may have symptoms that can be easily confused with COVID-19 infection. There are also asymptomatic patients who may require admission for their medical needs. With the different test options that are appropriate to different scenarios, it helps further minimise risks to our patients, staff and the community, while ensuring that patients in need receive necessary care promptly,” Mr Schraven added.
