(March 13, 2013 – Hong Kong) GHK Hospital Limited (“GHK”) is pleased that our bid for the private hospital site at Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong, has been successful. GHK will build a hospital, now named the Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital (the “Hospital”), which will provide high quality clinical services with a transparent fee structure that are accessible and affordable to the Hong Kong community. The Hospital aims to leverage the best clinical and management expertise to address the healthcare needs of the Hong Kong community. It will also focus on the training of healthcare professionals and the advancement of clinical and research excellence.

GHK, with a capital investment of approximately HK$5 billion, is a partnership between Parkway Pantai Limited (“Parkway Pantai”) and NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings”, Hong Kong stock code: 659).  Parkway Pantai will contribute 60% of the total investment cost and the remaining 40% by NWS Holdings.  The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (“HKU”) will play the role as a clinical partner, overseeing clinical governance, professional standards, appointment of doctors and the training of doctors, nurses and allied healthcare staff of the Hospital.

Parkway Pantai, one of Asia’s largest private healthcare providers with a regional network of 17 hospitals, is committed to contributing to the healthcare scene in Hong Kong.  “With over 30 years of experience in managing world-class hospitals, together with HKU’s established reputation for medical excellence and NWS Holdings’ local expertise in both construction and facilities management, we are confident that the Hospital will provide the best healthcare services for the residents of Hong Kong,” Dr Tan See Leng, Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Parkway Pantai remarks.

Patrick Lam, Executive Director of NWS Holdings, says, “NWS Holdings operates a range of businesses in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Macau, and we are pleased to be involved in the healthcare industry, which aligns with our long-term strategy of strengthening our service portfolio in Hong Kong.   The unique opportunity of having Parkway Pantai and HKU as strategic partners is a crucial factor for our participation in this meaningful project.”  NWS Holdings, through its subsidiary, has extensive experience and a track record in design and building hospitals, including Tseung Kwan O Hospital, and the extension and redevelopment of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, Hong Kong Baptist Hospital and St. Teresa’s Hospital.  Such solid experience in hospital building will be instrumental in supporting the construction of the Hospital.

Professor Lee Sum Ping, Dean of HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, foresees that the Hospital, being an affiliate teaching hospital of HKU, will be instrumental in nurturing a pipeline of healthcare professionals thereby improving the lives of the Hong Kong people, by providing an important base for teaching, training and research.  “Faced with an ageing population and the escalating demand for health-related services, we need to train more healthcare professionals.  The capacity of our current teaching hospital network, which includes Queen Mary Hospital as our base, would be inadequate to meet the healthcare needs of the society, in terms of disease volume and complexity and the public expectations, and the teaching and training demands for facilities and clinical material.  The Medical Faculty has been actively exploring novel means to fulfil our mission to serve the people of Hong Kong and to train healthcare professionals at a level of international excellence.  We are happy that our partners share the same vision.”

“The Hospital will provide additional resources for HKU to recruit and retain high quality healthcare professionals to take care of clinical duties and at the same time contribute to teaching and research,” Professor Lee adds.
